Properly installed and ventilated Western Red Cedar shake roofs commonly perform for 30 to 40 years in BC, with periodic cleaning and treatment.

Some municipalities have fire-rating requirements for new cedar roofs. We confirm what applies to your location and use treated or fire-rated cedar where required.

We install and restore Western Red Cedar shake and shingle roofs across the Lower Mainland: the Tri-Cities, Vancouver, the North Shore, Richmond, Delta, Surrey and the Fraser Valley. We are a BC contractor and do not take on work outside the province.

Somewhere between 25 and 40 years, and the spread is almost entirely about ventilation and moss. A cedar roof over a properly vented assembly, kept clear of overhanging branches, reaches the top of that range. The same roof on an unvented deck under a big maple can be finished in 18 years.

Pressure-treated cedar carries a fire rating and resists rot and fungal growth considerably better in our climate, which is why we specify it on most Lower Mainland work. Untreated cedar weathers to the classic grey faster and costs less, and it still makes sense on some heritage and outbuilding work.

Light surface moss can be treated and cleared without damaging the shakes, and it should be, annually. Once moss has been sitting long enough to hold water against the wood and the shakes have gone soft or cupped underneath, cleaning just removes the evidence. We will tell you which one you have.
